Slickshot Show-Offch4rm2nd0r took Izzet Aggro to sixth at 7-2 in the October 31, 2026 Standard Showcase Challenge, using an unusual burn package around the established Slickshot Show-Off and Pompous Battlemage core. MTGO’s published standings record a 1-2 quarterfinal loss to baconator5000’s Temur Omniscience.

Tersa LightshatterMacIsaac followed with fourth place in the 46-player Standard Challenge 32 on November 6, 2026, but without Tersa Lightshatter, Plasma Bolt or Scorching Shot. We see the Showcase build as a meaningful alternative for players who want removal and direct damage alongside their attackers, rather than committing as heavily to a spell-fuelled combat turn.

The Showcase List Leans Into Burn

Plasma BoltAgainst 71 other Izzet Aggro lists from the preceding 6 weeks, the Showcase build’s main-deck Tersa Lightshatter, Plasma Bolt and Scorching Shot appeared in just 5.6%, 7% and 9.9% of the comparison lists, respectively. Four Fire-Brained Scheme and one Ghitu Lavarunner were also less common choices, appearing in 14.1% and 16.9%. It retained every identified staple.

ch4rm2nd0r’s sixth-place Showcase list combines the usual creature core with three Plasma Bolt and three Scorching Shot across the main deck and sideboard.

Pompous BattlemageThe plan still rewards deploying Pompous Battlemage early and using Slickshot Show-Off to turn cheap spells into a large attack. But three Plasma Bolt and four Burst Lightning give this version a substantial burn component. The Moxgate burn guide describes the related approach as cheap direct damage supported by creatures such as Gandalf, Goblins' Bane and Hired Claw, both four-ofs here.

Scorching ShotPlasma Bolt costs 1 mana and deals 2 damage to any target, increasing to 3 if a nonland permanent left the battlefield that turn or a spell was warped that turn. Compared with Scorching Shot, it preserves the option to finish the opponent. Its sorcery speed is a real cost: you must commit during your own main phase.

Scorching Shot costs and deals 5 damage to a creature. The one main-deck copy and two sideboard copies let this build answer larger blockers without spending multiple burn spells. It cannot damage the opponent, so drawing it when the battlefield is clear costs you reach.

Tersa Lightshatter is a 3-mana hasty creature that exchanges up to 2 cards on entry, offering more immediate card selection than Pompous Battlemage’s prepared spell. On turn 3, it can replace unwanted cards and attack immediately. With at least 7 cards in your graveyard, its attack also offers a random graveyard card to play that turn, though randomness makes it an unreliable source of a specific finisher.

MacIsaac Keeps More of the Spell-Heavy Shell

Ancestral AngerMacIsaac’s published November 6 list instead uses Ancestral Anger, Callous Sell-Sword and Elusive Otter alongside Sleight of Hand, Wild Ride, Full Bore and Opt. Elusive Otter, Sleight of Hand, Opt and Wild Ride each appeared in at least 70.8% of the 72 lists in the archetype profile. This is the more familiar surrounding shell.

MacIsaac’s fourth-place list omits the Showcase burn package and uses four Spell Pierce in its sideboard.

Spirebluff CanalBoth builds play four Slickshot Show-Off and four Pompous Battlemage, plus four Spirebluff Canal and four Steam Vents. The Showcase list has four Riverpyre Verge to MacIsaac’s three. Their shared threats reward sequencing several spells into an attack; the distinction is how much of the supporting deck can operate as removal or direct damage when combat stalls.

The Playoff Results Favour Different Opponents

MacIsaac’s event standings and bracket show fourth place at 5-3, with the playoff results listed separately: a 2-0 win over Lifegain, followed by a 0-2 semifinal loss to Azorius Momo. ch4rm2nd0r’s identified playoff opponent was Temur Omniscience, which won their quarterfinal 2-1.

Across the archetype’s recorded top-eight matches, Izzet Aggro is 3-2 against Lifegain, 3-1 against Izzet Spellementals and 3-0 against Mono-Green Landfall. It is 0-2 against each of Azorius Momo, Jund Sacrifice, Boros Dragons and Dimir Midrange. These are small playoff samples, not matchup win-rate estimates.

Spell PierceFor creature-heavy games, the Showcase list can increase to three Scorching Shot after sideboarding. Against spell-based plans, its two Spell Pierce offer a different axis, while MacIsaac has four. We prefer the Showcase removal package when a large blocker is the immediate problem; its extra creature removal does not solve every difficult matchup.
