Star Trek brings back Edge of Eternities' Station mechanic for 17 Spacecraft, adding ships that charge through noncreature spells and a Borg Cube discounted by artifact creatures. Wizards' collecting guide confirms that prerelease events begin on November 6, 2026, ahead of the November 13 tabletop release.

The SeriemaThe strongest precedent comes from ships that paid something back before becoming creatures. Warmaker Gunship removed a threat, The Seriema found a legendary creature, and Lumen-Class Frigate strengthened your board at only 2 counters. Star Trek keeps all three approaches available: immediate value, intermediate rewards and a larger flying threat to finish the job.

Ships Before the Spacecraft Subtype

Predator, FlagshipMagic's early ships were not all spaceships, but they established the mechanical alternatives. In his Vehicle history, published on February 17, 2025, Mark Rosewater traced the idea back to Alpha's Pirate Ship: a creature representing the vessel and its occupants together. Nemesis' Predator, Flagship and Planeshift's Skyship Weatherlight instead represented named vessels as noncreature artifacts.

Skyship WeatherlightThose artifacts behaved like tools. Predator, Flagship granted flying and destroyed flying creatures. The 4-mana Skyship Weatherlight exiled a selection of artifacts and creatures from your library, then charged another 4 mana to retrieve one at random. Neither needed creatures aboard to function.

Skysovereign, Consul FlagshipKaladesh introduced Vehicles and Crew. Skysovereign, Consul Flagship used Crew 3 to become a creature for the turn, with damage on entry and attack. Later vessels followed that framework: Parhelion II, including its Neon Dynasty Commander version, used Crew 4 and produced attacking Angels; Warhammer 40,000 supplied explicitly science-fiction Vehicles such as Thunderhawk Gunship.

Rosewater's Kaladesh design account, published on September 19, 2016, explains why boarding creatures like Equipment failed. Creatures sharing a balloon created awkward questions about attacking separately and remaining aboard. Tapping creatures to switch on a separate combatant solved that problem without tracking passengers.

How Station Works and Why Wizards Made It

Wizards' July 8 mechanics explanation gives Station a different job from Crew. During your main phase, with the stack empty, you tap another untapped creature you control. When the ability resolves, the permanent receives charge counters equal to that creature's power. A creature that entered this turn can do the work; the Spacecraft cannot station itself.

The counters stay after the turn ends. Each activation uses one creature, but you can activate Station repeatedly with different untapped creatures. A 3-power creature contributes 3 counters now; another can contribute more on a later turn. Crew instead asks for enough combined power in one activation and makes its Vehicle a creature only until end of turn.

Lumen-Class FrigateThresholds grant the abilities in their section while the permanent has enough counters. It becomes an artifact creature only when that section also supplies power and toughness. Lumen-Class Frigate therefore gives other creatures +1/+1 at 2 counters but does not become a creature until 12. Losing enough counters switches those threshold benefits off.

Uthros, Titanic GodcoreBecoming a creature does not reset how long you have controlled the permanent. Wizards' July 21 release notes explain that a ship you have controlled continuously since your turn began can attack once activated. Planets remain lands: Uthros, Titanic Godcore reaches its enhanced mana ability at 12 counters without becoming a creature. Planet itself has no intrinsic rules function.

In a June 25 design interview in 2025, Wizards described wanting enormous spacecraft to feel like quests toward a large payoff rather than ordinary Vehicles. Station combined an early card-adjacency experiment with the familiar act of tapping creatures to operate a ship. Star Trek's lead designer subsequently described Spacecraft as part of the set's “build-up” gameplay in Wizards' October 23 design article in 2026.

Asked by a fan whether Edge of Eternities existed to justify Star Trek, Rosewater answered on Blogatog on November 2, 2026, that the team wanted to make a space-opera set. We think Station's strongest design decision is preserving your investment between turns: you can spend one creature's combat contribution at a time instead of repeatedly assembling a full crew.

What Worked in Edge of Eternities Limited

The 17Lands Premier Draft table, using a start date of July 30, 2025, reports Warmaker Gunship at 61.6% games-in-hand win rate across 25,606 instances, with Lumen-Class Frigate at 60.2% across 23,862. Those count instances in hand, not independent matches or a head-to-head contest between the cards.

The cards explain the results. Warmaker Gunship costs 3 and deals entry damage based on your artifact count before reaching its 4/3 flying body at 6 counters. Lumen-Class Frigate costs 2 and needs only a single 2-power creature to unlock its team bonus. You can get useful work from either without paying for its final form.

Warmaker Gunship combines immediate interaction with a later flying threat.

Synthesizer LabshipMagic Field Guides' saved win-rate table, covering July 29 to September 1, 2025, puts Synthesizer Labship at 60.0% across 13,325 card-in-hand instances. Its separate The Seriema figures give that ship 60.2% across 6,731 instances over the same dates. Synthesizer Labship starts animating another artifact at 2 counters; The Seriema replaces itself with your choice of legendary creature immediately.

Station did not make every build-around successful. Magic Field Guides' Space Stations guide reports a 54.0% game win rate across 21,148 games from July 29 to September 1, 2025, against its 55.3% overall average. Tapping your board to develop ships left too few blockers. Strong individual spacecraft did not excuse losing the early turns.

Commander Made Better Use of the Largest Ships

Dawnsire, Sunstar DreadnoughtDawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought costs 5 and does nothing immediately, but its first threshold is the important one. At 10 counters, attacking with any creature triggers 100 damage to a creature or planeswalker. At 20, Dawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought becomes a flying 20/20. Bennie Smith's July 21 Commander guide in 2025 recommends reaching 10 first and pursuing the body when a finisher is needed.

EDHREC's September 16 retrospective in 2026 counted 2,650 Dawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought decks on August 1, 2026, against 1,085 for The Seriema. The latter leads a legendary-creature toolbox: tutor on entry, then protect tapped legends once fully stationed. Smith's July 7 deck guide in 2025 uses that protection to make sweepers one-sided.

Standard's record is much thinner. An August 1 Standard brew in 2025 used Bygone Colossus to station Dawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought. Warmaker Gunship later appeared in 4 published Jeskai Artifacts lists across the weeks of October 19 and October 26, 2026. That is experimentation, not a demonstrated Spacecraft metagame.

Scryfall's paper prices put Dawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought at $12.25 on November 5, 2026, up from $6.68 on August 4. The Seriema moved from $0.82 to $1.24 over those dates, while Warmaker Gunship moved from $0.26 to $0.25. These histories begin after the August 1, 2025 release and do not include the ships' launch prices.

Star Trek Changes How Ships Get Started

Romulan Bird-of-PreyRomulan Bird-of-Prey can charge without tapping your creatures. The 2-mana ship has hexproof while it is not a creature and gains 2 counters whenever you cast a noncreature spell in that state. Four spells supply its 8-counter flying threshold, though becoming a creature ends both its cloaking protection and that charging engine.

Borg Cube costs 7 in , reduced by affinity for artifact creatures. Its entry trigger exiles a creature; a later entry or attack trigger can assimilate a creature card exiled with it. Its 12-counter threshold gives your artifact creatures flying. Unlike a ship that merely promises future combat, it can remove something before you commit any Station power.

Borg Cube

Borg Cube {5}{W}{B}

Artifact — Spacecraft

Affinity for artifact creatures Whenever this Spacecraft enters or attacks, assimilate a creature card exiled with it. If you can't, exile up to one target creature. (To assimilate a card, put it onto the battlefield under your control with a +1/+1 counter. It's a Borg artifact creature and loses all other creature types.) Station 12+ | Artifact creatures you control have flying.

$9.79 · €10.58

Borg Cube discounts itself through artifact creatures and starts interacting before reaching 12 charge counters.

U.S.S. Enterprise-A, Free SpiritThe Federation ships spread that early value across different jobs. The 5-mana U.S.S. Enterprise-A, Free Spirit supplies three 1/1 Officers, then gains flying and lifelink at 6 counters. The 3-mana U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class offers the top card of your library the first time it receives counters each turn, reaching flying and vigilance at 7. The 4-mana Enterprise NX-01 taps and stuns an opposing creature before its 6-counter threshold.

U.S.S. Discovery, at Black AlertAt 5 mana, U.S.S. Discovery, at Black Alert discovers 5 on entry and attack, while H.M.S. Bounty, Unlikely Timeship tutors a Whale and can earn one extra turn through combat damage. Deep Space 9 costs 9, immediately puts permanent cards from the top four cards of your library onto the battlefield, and repeats that each upkeep. Its Station reward is a team-wide +3/+3, not a creature body.

Planet also returns without making Station compulsory. Vulcan and Romulus enter tapped, gain 1 life and produce either of their two listed colours. Unlike Uthros, Titanic Godcore, neither asks you to divert creatures into charging a land.

The Limited Picks

Suurok-Class Science VesselSuurok-Class Science Vessel is our first common Spacecraft pick. It costs 3, draws a card immediately and needs 5 counters for flying. A 3-power creature and a 2-power creature can complete that threshold together, but leave both tapped. Oberth-Class Starship is another solid playable: 2 mana finds a Plains, helping you develop lands before tackling its 6-counter threshold.

Class-F ShuttlecraftClass-F Shuttlecraft is the conditional common. Three mana for fixing can serve a multicolour deck, but it provides no card or blocker on entry and needs 6 counters for flying and vigilance. Taking it as a cheap evasive creature is the trap. Take it when the mana ability earns its place.

U.S.S. Excelsior, Cutting EdgeAt uncommon, U.S.S. Excelsior, Cutting Edge is an early pick. Four mana destroys a tapped opposing creature before you start its 8-counter climb, following Warmaker Gunship's successful removal-first approach. U.S.S. Voyager, Lone Wanderer is stronger in a deck with expensive follow-ups: its 4-mana entry effect puts two lands onto the battlefield tapped, but its own 8-counter threshold still asks for substantial board investment.

D-7 Battle CruiserAmong rares, D-7 Battle Cruiser offers the most attractive intermediate reward. It costs 2 and starts making a temporary hasty 2/1 Klingon each combat at only 3 counters. That resembles Lumen-Class Frigate's useful structure: unlock a repeatable board advantage long before the final body. U.S.S. Discovery, at Black Alert is an early pick because discover 5 already pays you before its 6-counter threshold.

The set's answers make entry value especially important. Perils of the Past destroys artifacts at common; Malfunctioning Holodeck can exile a ship before it animates; Guidance Failure explicitly targets creatures or Spacecraft. Once a ship becomes a creature, He's Dead, Jim adds another common answer. Hexproof before activation is protection with an expiry condition.

H.M.S. Bounty, Unlikely TimeshipH.M.S. Bounty, Unlikely Timeship needs a Whale and 8 counters to deliver its headline payoff. Without a Whale to find, 5 mana does not affect combat immediately. Deep Space 9 is the other temptation to resist in an ordinary deck: 9 mana is a real restriction even when the eventual effect is excellent.

Beyond Limited and the First Prices

Romulan Bird-of-Prey is the most plausible Standard candidate because a spell-heavy deck can charge it while keeping creatures available for combat. D-7 Battle Cruiser asks for only one 3-power Station contribution to start producing attackers. Both cost 2, avoiding the five-mana setup turn that made Dawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought so demanding.

Deep Space 9Commander offers better homes for the expensive ships. Borg Cube rewards an artifact-creature board that both discounts it and supplies Station power. U.S.S. Discovery, at Black Alert fits decks that can repeatedly exploit entry effects. Deep Space 9 wants a permanent-heavy library and enough ramp to make 9 mana realistic; H.M.S. Bounty, Unlikely Timeship makes its strongest case in a deck already willing to include Whales.

U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-ClassThe early paper prices are already moving sharply. Scryfall's history puts U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class at $5.03 on November 5, 2026, down from $22.02 on October 30. Borg Cube fell from $11.70 to $9.79 over those dates, and Romulan Bird-of-Prey from $1.64 to $1.24. D-7 Battle Cruiser moved from $1.08 to $1.31.

U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class fell from $22.02 on October 30, 2026, to $5.03 on November 5, 2026.

That puts Borg Cube below Dawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought's $12.25 on November 5, 2026, while Romulan Bird-of-Prey exactly matches The Seriema's $1.24. The incoming supply is concrete: Play Boosters arrive with release, and Wizards also lists special Beam Me Up Bundle treatments for 8 Spacecraft. Early quotes can change substantially before either competitive play or Commander demand becomes established.

What Comes Next

Prerelease runs November 6 to November 12, 2026, followed by Arena on November 10 and tabletop release on November 13. The first useful Limited comparison is whether Suurok-Class Science Vessel and U.S.S. Excelsior, Cutting Edge reward the same value-before-activation approach as Edge of Eternities' successful ships. For Standard, watch whether Romulan Bird-of-Prey can turn ordinary spellcasting into pressure quickly enough to justify its slot.
